The pediatrician is running 25 minutes behind. My son has licked the fish tank, pulled two magazines apart, and is now negotiating loudly for my phone.

I open the bag. Wipes. A diaper. One dead crayon.

It took me four years to work out that the problem was never the waiting. Waits are twenty minutes and they happen constantly. The problem was that I kept packing for the trip I was on instead of leaving things in there permanently.

So the rule now is that nothing earns a spot unless it lives in the bag forever. It has to be light enough that I forget it is there, need no batteries, and survive being handed to a toddler in a room full of strangers.

I do not pack for outings any more. The bag is already packed. That is the entire system and it took me two children to work it out.

Why It Is First
It is the only thing in the bag that reliably buys more than ten minutes. Thirty plus real fastenings, and nothing that lights up or makes a sound, which matters when you are in a waiting room and not a playground.

One Last Thing

None of this is about being an organized parent. I am not one. It is about removing the decision entirely, so that the bag is already right whether or not I was thinking clearly when I left the house.
